El Monte

Forklift Parts El Monte - Located east of Los Angeles within the San Gabriel Valley, El Monte is a city in Los Angeles County, state of California. After the turn of the century during the year 2000, the industrial, residential and commercial city had a population of approximately 115,000. During 2002, it was ranked the 44th largest city in California and the 191st largest city in the U.S. Historically, it is called "The End of the Santa Fe Trail."

Initially, El Monte was only an island within the middle of the San Gabriel Valley. The island itself is roughly 4 miles wide and 7 miles long. El Monte was not named after a mountain as numerous individuals might think. In archaic Spanish, the name El Monte means 'meadow or marsh' or 'the wooded place'. The city was named by Spanish missionaries and soldiers that stopped here in between 1770 and 1830. The island was situated between two rivers and was totally abundant in wispy willows, cattails, and alders, as well as watercress and wild grapefruit. During the 1850's, when the state was organized into more organized townships, the State Legislature named it the El Monte Township. The name didn't stick and quickly reverted to simply El Monte.

According to the 2009 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city include: Wells Fargo, which hires 1,800 people, El Monte Union High School District, which employs 1,742 individuals, Mountain View Elementary School District, which hires 1,007 individuals, Vons, which employs 736 individuals, Longo Toyota-Lexus, that hires 600 people, City of El Monte, which hires 526 individuals, Driftwood Dairy, Cathay Bank and M.C. Gill Corporation, all of who each employs 250 individuals.
