The city was incorporated on the 7th of August, 1905 and has since been slowly moving from a economy based on heavy industry towards one that concentrates more on service and commercial industries. San Pablo, along with the unincorporated parts of North Richmond, Rich Eastmond Heights and El Sobrante, are surrounded by the Richmond's city limits. The city is currently the 56th biggest in the state with a population that was approximately 103,468 during the year 2006. Richmond is the largest city within the country who has a green party mayor.

The city was ranked the 6th most dangerous city within the US during the year 2010. Thankfully, majority of the crime problem is situated within the cities core with the rest of the city being somewhat safe. The police department admits that the city has had a chronic violent crime rate for decades.

In Richmond, there are several unique companies located here. Amongst which was the Giant Powder Company. This company made both dynamite and gunpowder, but closed down during 1960. Point Molate was the site of the last active whaling station in the county, that was closed in 1971. The Prohibition in 1919 caused Winehaven, one of the world's largest wineries, to close down.

All through World War II, the economy was mainly supported by industrial businesses, specifically shipbuilding. Then again, as time has passed, it has become a major seaport and ships over 26 million tons of merchandise per year, with the bulk of merchandise being oil and petroleum. A major oil refinery, run by Chevron USA, is located within the city and has a capacity of fifteen million barrels.

The Social Security Administration, which employs more than 1000 individuals, and the Kaiser Pemanente's Richmond Medical Center Hospital, located in the downtown area are a coupe of the biggest companies in the city. Treeskunk Production, a video game animation studio, and the Bay View recording studio are likewise located within the downtown. Galaxy Desserts is also operated and run in Richmond.

Vetrazzo is a business which has won several awards for its green initiatives, is located in the previous Ford Assembly Plant. They take old traffic lights and recycled beer bottles and makes wonderful glass countertops.
