During 1870, the city of Modesto was founded as a train stop between the cities of Sacramento and Los Angeles. Folklore says that the city was named Modesto after California financier William C. Ralston declined to have the city named after him, and a railroad worker who spoke Spanish declared that Ralston was really modest - "Muy modesto" in Spanish.

Modesto region's fertile farmland consists of numerous wineries, the most popular of which is E & J Gallo. The Gallo Glass Company is a significant local employer, providing work in its huge bottle manufacturing operation. The residents of Modesto are also working at steel plants and food canneries. Food processing facilities, like for instance the Blue Diamond Growers almond factory and Foster Farms poultry plant, are important employers. At least 20% of the city's labor force commutes to nearby counties for jobs.

Besides agriculture related industries, major sectors are professional, management and related jobs, education, accommodation and food services, healthcare, light manufacturing and social assistance.

The city of Modesto has a strong arts and culture sector. Amongst local arts organizations is the Central West ballet, Gallo Center for the Arts, The State Theatre, The Townsend Opera Players and The Modesto Symphony. Local attractions comprise The McHenry Mansion, The Castle Air Museum and The Great Valley Museum.

The mild weather of Northern California makes the city of Modesto perfect for year-round outdoor recreation. Watersports like for instance river rafting, boating and houseboating are popular here. The area has excellent facilities for camping and golfing. Indoor recreational activities are offered for free at the huge public skate park in Beyer High School. Yosemite National Park is less than an hour away.
