The economy within Santa Ana is mainly dependent on technology. The city is in a position to steer the rest of Southern California into an information age. Santa Ana ranks third within the state of California for the amount of office space existing downtown, coming in behind San Fransisco and Los Angeles. They ranked thirteenth for the largest number of businesses established and have the 14th largest consumer market in the nation.

At first, the economy in the area around Santa Ana was the numerous agricultural industries. However, with Huges, Northrop as well as various aerospace businesses became very prominent soon after the end of World War II. Once the University of California was built in Irvine in the mid sixties, science based industries prospered and developed. Santa Ana is considered the top high-tech area within Southern California. Among the "Fast Fifty" businesses, Santa Ana has twenty one of them established in the city limits.

The city strongly encourages small businesses, which is one of the reasons the city's financial system is really strong. Nearly a quarter of these smaller companies are minority owned. Due to the cities strong economic base, it could outperform many other cities within the state of California during hard economic times.
